About the university
The creation of the National University of Southern Patagonia was an aspiration for several decades, in this regard can be mentioned the decree of Governor Gregores who in the middle of this century proposed the creation of University Centers with a technological orientation. In 1962, the first Center of Higher Education was created, ascribed to the National University of the South, which became the first institutional precedent for higher education in the region. This center that later gave rise to the University Institute of Santa Cruz, together with a series of Centers of Tertiary Studies non-university constituted the basis of creation of the Federal University of Southern Patagonia, that from 1991 worked under the regime of provincial universities. The actual transfer to national jurisdiction was made in January 1996. Institutions pre-existent to the University proposed since 1987 to organize the Higher Education in the Southern Patagonia. This regional vocation allowed in 1989 the newly created Province of Tierra del Fuego to formalize its participation in the project, through a Treaty signed by the Governors of the provinces, with the prospect that the Academic Units would operate in four Santacruceñas localities and in Land of Fire. This long process of continuous growth was the product of the constant support and encouragement of the southern communities of the continent as well as of the efforts of teachers, students and technical and administrative staff, which have enabled the development, growth and normalization of National University of Southern Patagonia.
