About the university
The Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen - short Howest - emerged in 1995 from a merger of eight schools: the Higher Institute of Social Studies (Youth) Klemskerke; Higher Institute for Economic, Social and Paramedical Higher Education, in short Hiepso, Kortrijk; Higher National Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Ostend; Higher National Institute of Technical Education, Bruges; Higher Institute for Technical Education Departments of Normal, Bruges; Provincial Industrial University, Kortrijk; the Rijksnormaalschool Bruges; the Rijksnormaalschool Kortrijk (which was merged in 1986 with the Rijksnormaalschool Brugge). The decree of July 13, 1994 concerning university colleges in the Flemish Community, it was open existing schools should unite in larger multidisciplinary entities.
