About the university
Established by Law 7,555 of December 28, 1986, the Foundation of Higher Education of São João del Rei (FUNREI) was the result of the meeting and federalization of two institutions: Don Bosco College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters maintained until then by the Province Of St. John Bosco and created by Federal Decree No. 34,392 of October 27, 1953; And the Municipal Foundation of São João del-Rei, created by Municipal Law no. 1,177, dated October 6, 1970, maintainer of the Faculty of Economic, Administrative and Accounting Sciences (FACEAC) and the Faculty of Industrial Engineering (FAEIN). The three faculties cited remained until the approval of the new statute and regiment of FUNREI, which instituted a departmental structure. FUNREI was transformed into a University through Law 10.425, of April 19, 2002, and became the Federal University of São João del-Rei, using the acronym chosen by the academic community UFSJ.
