About the university
Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) is a Brazilian public higher education institution located in the state of São Paulo, one of the three federal universities in the state, along with the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) and the Federal University of ABC UFABC). Consisting of 7 campuses distributed by the state, it is one of the universities maintained by the Ministry of Education with a larger public budget. The Paulista School of Medicine, which gave rise to the university, was founded in 1933 as a private medical school in Vila Clementino. In 1938 the Escola Paulista de Enfermagem and Hospital São Paulo were inaugurated in the same district, used as a center for research and university extension. Over the years, it was sustained through private resources and government subsidies until it was nationalized as a federal institution in 1956. In the midst of a series of crises in the 1960s and 1970s, its transformation into a university was planned, which did not materialize . Only in 1994 was Unifesp founded as a university specializing in health sciences.
