Federal University of Goias

The Federal University of Goiás was created on December 14, 1960 with the meeting of five higher schools that existed in Goiânia: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry, School of Engineering, Conservatory of Music and Faculty Of Medicine. As of this date, Goiás started to form its own professional staff and not to depend on skilled labor coming from other regions of the country. For the young people of Goiás this meant an opportunity for professional and intellectual training in a public institution, free of charge and of quality. It was a milestone in the history of the state. However, this victory of the Goian society was preceded by a process that demanded great efforts on the part of professors and students of the time. In 1959, the professors of the five schools that formed the UFG at its foundation formed the "Permanent Commission for the Creation of the University of Central Brazil", presided over by Professor Colemar Natal e Silva, then director of the Faculty of Law of Goiânia. The purpose of the commission was to formulate a project to create the university and give it to the National Congress. In parallel to the mobilization of the teachers, the students from Goiás promoted a vigorous movement for the creation of a public university, to be maintained by the federal government. They created, in April 1959, the Federal University Pro-Ensino Federal Front, which held meetings, hearings and debates with authorities at student assemblies or congresses, and organized demonstrations and rallies.
