About the university
In 1864 , St. Joseph's College, led by the Congregation of the Fathers of St. Croix, opened in Memramcook 2 , 25 kilometers southeast of Moncton. In 1868 , the provincial government granted it the power to award university degrees. In 1898, the institution was renamed the University of St. Joseph's College and, in 1928, took the name of St. Joseph's University. Later, in 1953, the institution transferred its academic programs (education, science and commerce) from Memramcook to Moncton. In 1890 , the Eudists (Congregation of Jesus and Mary) founded Sainte-Anne College, at Sainte-Anne 2 in 1977 , at Pointe-de-l'Église, Nova Scotia . The latter also founded Sacred Heart College at Caraquet in 1899, 2 which, after a devastating fire in 1915, was relocated to Bathurst; The Sacred Heart College in Bathurst became the Sacred Heart University in 1941. In 1943, in Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur, the Religious Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur founded the Académie Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur, where the first program Classical course for girls in Acadia; The first bachelors were promoted there in 1947. Two years later, in 1949, the Academy moved to Moncton and now takes the name of Collège Notre-Dame d'Acadie. The Eudists founded the Collège Saint-Louis in Edmundston in 1946 ; (1) Institution took the title of university in 1952. In 1949, the Religious Hospitallers of Saint-Joseph founded the Collège Maillet in Saint-Basile , today a district of Edmundston. Collège Maillet, the first classical girls' college in the northwest of the province, will be affiliated with Saint-Louis University. In the northeast of the province, the Religious of Jesus Mary founded a classical girls' college at Shippagan in 1960, an affiliated college of the Sacred Heart University of Bathurst.
