About the university
The law of the colleges of general and vocational education adopted by the National Assembly of Quebec on June 29, 1967, created educational institutions where, shortly after their secondary studies, students would come to rub shoulders with short-term students in the middle Of work after completing a vocational program and students preparing to enter university after completing a general education program. Thus, on May 15, 1968, the Cégep de Shawinigan was created, which integrated the collegiate functions of the Institut de Technologie, the Séminaire Sainte-Marie, the Collège universitaire scientifique, the École des infirmières de l Sainte-Thérése Hospital and École Normale Ste-Pie X. While the Cégep's premises and services were scattered throughout the city during the first years, since September 1974 they have been grouped together on a single campus, The first in Quebec to be designed specifically for college education. On 20 April 1994, the Board of Directors adopted a resolution requesting that the name of the Cégep de Shawinigan be changed. On February 1, 1995, the Government of Quebec agreed to change the name of the Shawinigan General and Professional College to Shawinigan College.
