About the university
In 1862 , when the public education was in the hands of the Roman Catholic Church in Quebec , the Brothers of the Christian Schools decided to establish a school of higher education. This new institution, the Académie de Québec , offers courses in classical , modern and commercial courses as well as in the normal school . In 1925 , cramped in their premises in Old Quebec , the Brothers ordered the construction of a larger building on still agricultural lands in the village of Sainte-Foy . Today, this place is called the Pavillon Montcalm and was converted in 1976 into a rental building. During the Quiet Revolution , Quebec began secularization and wanted to improve access to higher education. On June 29, 1967, Bill 60 was passed creating the first twelve CEGEPs , including Sainte-Foy. The construction of the existing pavilions was then commenced. The Albert-Rousseau room is on this site.
