About the university

The Catholic University of Temuco was founded on September 8, 1959, by the then Bishop of the Diocese Bishop Alejandro Menchaca Lira, becoming the first institution of Higher Education created in the Region of Araucanía. Its academic activities began with the so-called "University Courses", the first semester of 1960, with the advice and support of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. At the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies, in the framework of the discussion of the "University Reform" at national level, the concept of "Regional Headquarters" was formalized, formalized in 1972 by the Honorable Superior Council of the Pontifical Catholic University. With this new administrative relationship, U. Católica de Temuco consolidates its academic offer in Pedagogy careers, positioning itself as the great training institution for teachers in the south of the country.
