About the university
If the history of the first university of Nantes, that which stretches from its foundation in 1460 at the initiative of the dukes of Brittany until its suppression by the French Revolution in 1793, was already partly known, on the other hand, The subsequent episodes did not give rise to any detailed study. The ambition of this collective work is to reconstruct and present all the events that marked more than five centuries of the complex history that took place in Nantes. It presents the continuities and breaks that marked the various higher education initiatives taken by the city until 1993, when this book ends. The re-founding of the university in 1962 is only one of the stages of the course proposed in the book. Written by some twenty specialists, based on a very rich documentation of archives and testimonies, illustrated with an iconography largely unpublished, this book constitutes the first complete history of a French university.
