About the university
The University of Orleans was officially founded by Pope Clement V on January 27, 1306, with four papal bulls (a bull is a document in which the Pope recorded the various obligations of the university, the masters, the students and The privileges attached thereto). The inhabitants of Orleans were reluctant to accept these privileges and tried to oppose the founding of the university. Following a particularly violent riot in 1309, King Philip the Fair confirmed his foundation in 1312. Civil and canon law are the teachings that are dispensed there. The reputation of Orleans for the teaching of law passed very quickly over our borders, at least until the 15th century. In 1793, the University of Orleans, like all those of France, was suppressed by decree of the National Convention. The revival of the university was initiated by Roger Secretary, Mayor of Orleans, elected in 1959, and Gérald Antoine, first Rector of the new Academy created in 1961. Both wanted to establish, south of Paris, The first major European university campus, "according to Pierre Sudreau, the then Minister of Education. The first act was the acquisition of 400 hectares of the Domaine de la Source, a major operation launched in the early 1960s with the university campus, but also the creation of the new town of the Source and the " Installation of the CNRS (1967) and BRGM (1969) campuses.
