About the university
Before the events of May 1968, there existed in Paris only one university composed of six faculties. On 12 November 1968 the Higher Education Guidance Act abolished the old faculties and divided them into teaching and research units (UER), grouped together in universities. Following this law, most universities opted for a monodisciplinarity. However, Robert Mallet, rector of the Academy of Paris from 1970 to 1980, wanted to create a multidisciplinary university. Thanks to the support of several personalities from the EBUs of Letters, Sciences and Medicine, he reached his goal and the Paris-VII University was created in 1970-1971. At the beginning, the university was established in several places in Paris: Medicine was established in the hospitals and universities Lariboisière-Saint-Louis and Bichat-Beaujon; The Letters and Human Sciences were distributed in premises situated at Charles V and at Censier; The Sciences and the administration found themselves on the campus of Jussieu. In spite of these many premises, the university faced logistical problems. Indeed, Jussieu was not big enough to accommodate both the scientific components and the administration. Three higher education institutions (Paris Diderot, Paris VI and IPGP) already shared the campus, which had nearly 40,000 students, twice the original size. In 1995, the president of the university presented the relocation project to the supervisory authorities. With this project, the presidency of the university wanted to create a campus open on the city, scattered in a district in total renovation: Paris Rive Gauche. The project was finally passed by the university's board of directors on 19 November 1996 and work began in 2004 with the renovation of the Grands Moulins and the Halle aux Farines. The construction of the Condorcet, Buffon, Lavoisier, Lamarck, Sophie Germain and Olympe de Gouges buildings followed. The first courses are given in January 2007 in the Halle aux Farines and a month later the Prime Minister inaugurates the new site of the university, in the presence of the ministers of Education, Higher Education and Research, The Mayor of Paris and the President of the Ile-de-France region. Since 2012, the construction of all the buildings of the university has been completed. Now, apart from medicine and IUT, all disciplines meet in Paris Left Bank.
