Founded in 1756 by a society of amateurs, the Free School of Drawing will become in 1769, by virtue of the royal permission to create academies in province, Royal Academy of Drawing and Geometry. By an Imperial Decree dated January 25, 1807, and Signed by Napoleon Bonaparte in Warsaw, the School will move to the Palais Saint-Pierre (Place des Terreaux). Created to bring to the Lyonnaise silk factory talented designers, the Ecole first royal, then imperial and, at the advent of the Republic (1848), national, Will not cease to assert itself in the great national artistic contests. Placed first under the authority of the Academy, it will subsequently be subordinate to the Secretariat for Education and Fine Arts and, from 1959 onwards, the Ministry of Culture. Its administration has always been entrusted to the commune of Lyon. Since March 2007, the School of Visual Arts of the Subsistances, the School, has been installed on the historical site of the Subsistances. Formerly a convent of the Order of the Visitation in the 17th century, then a military building until 1995, the Les Subsistances site consists of a group of buildings of 22,000 m2 and now hosts two institutions that allow a unique experience in France: The coexistence on one and the same place of a training and research institution dedicated to the visual arts (the National School of Fine Arts of Lyon) and a structure dedicated to the performing arts (the association Les nouvelles subsistances ). Established mainly in the square building, the École benefits from some 10,000 m2 of renovated premises in order to satisfy the needs and specificities of its teaching and research activities. Workshops, amphitheatres, library, exhibition spaces ... allowing to accompany the projects of the students.
