About the university
La Femis or La Fémis (acronym corresponding to its former name, European Foundation for Image and Sound Crafts), a national higher education school for image and sound professions, is a French public higher education institution that delivers Technical and artistic education to train professionals in the audiovisual and film industries. La Fémis was founded in 1986 to take over from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques (IDHEC), a university under the supervision of the French Ministry of Culture and the CNC and belonging to the Selective University of Paris Sciences and Letters - PSL Research University. Created in 1943. Since 1999, its premises have been located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, at №6 Rue Francœur, in the buildings of the former Pathé-Natan studios. It is with the École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière and the Ecole Supérieure d'Audiovisuel - under the tutelage of the Éducation nationale - one of the three public cinema schools in France, and is part of the A restricted circle of internationally acclaimed film schools with the NFTS in London, the Tisch School in New York, the USC in Los Angeles or the FAMU in Prague. Many personalities of the cinema, French but also international, are from the formations of the Fémis. The school thus enjoys a certain reputation in the film industry. The American magazine Variety named it one of the best film schools in the world. In 2012, in its ranking of the world's top film schools, which includes US-based schools, The Hollywood Reporter ranks the Fémis as sixth in the world. In 2014, in a ranking of the best schools based outside the United States, the magazine ranks the school in 3rd place behind the NFTS in London and the Film School in Lodz.
