About the university
If, over the centuries, several masters have taught their arts to selected pupils, it was not until 1801 that the first establishment in Sade, rue Dorée, was opened in 1801 Whose vocation is the learning of art and creation in Avignon. Called originally, "École des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon", the establishment will relocate several times and change its name. The school moved to the rue des Lices in 1889, in the eastern wing of the passenger barracks, formerly the General Chaplaincy. An inscription on the pediment of an extension of the building is always visible. In 1928, the school changed its name to become a School of Decorative Arts and then, in 1965, Avignon Municipal School of Fine Arts and Architecture. In 1979, the Ministry of Culture wanted to separate the architecture from the other disciplines taught, linking the latter to the pedagogical unit of architecture of Marseille.
