About the university
The Savoie-Mont-Blanc University, formerly known as the University of Savoie and officially called the University of Chambéry1, is a French university located in the departments of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, more precisely on the communes of Chambéry, Le Bourget-du-Lac And Jacob-Bellecombette in Savoie and Annecy in Haute-Savoie. It was founded in 1979 from university colleges created in 1960 and has been a founding member of the PRES University of Grenoble since July 2010. It has opted in 2014 for the status of associate of the ComEU Grenoble-Alpes University. Multidisciplinary, it trains more than 14,000 students in the fields of Science and Technology, Art, Letters, and Languages, Law, Economics, Management and Human and Social Sciences, and research is carried out in 19 research laboratories. On May 27, 2014, the board of directors of the institution decided to change the name of the institution. In 2015, the University of Savoy changed its identity and became the "Savoie Mont Blanc University" 2Capital of the county then of the duchy of Savoy, from 1295 to 1563, at the height of the States of Savoy, Chambéry As opposed to the new capital Turin, which obtained a university in 1405, and only obtained the creation of "preparatory schools" preparing the Savoyard students before leaving for Turin. Savoy was annexed to France in 1860, and several administrations were created there. A rectorate, common to the two newly created departments of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, is thus instituted to manage education. However, unlike the other French rectorates, this one does not have a university, and the students of the academy are oriented towards the universities of Grenoble and Lyon to continue their studies. A preparatory school for higher education in science and literature, as well as a practical school of science, were instituted at Chambéry by a decree of 18 February 1861 for this public. These schools are endowed with dedicated buildings, built from 1890 to 1892 in the current street Marcoz3. The rectorate of Chambery was suppressed in 1920, but the preparatory school was preserved while specializing in the preparation for entry to the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble4.
