About the university
From the end of the 19th century until 1968, all the faculties were grouped in the University of Aix-Marseille presided over by the Rector of the Academy. In accordance with the law of 12 November 1968, the university has been divided into three establishments: Aix-Marseille I (University of Provence) and Aix-Marseille II were created in 1970 (Aix-Marseille II, named University of the Mediterranean In 1994), then Aix-Marseille III in 1973 (named Paul-Cézanne in 2004). Nearly 40 years later, in June 2007, the three universities of Aix-Marseille expressed their desire to merge to create Aix-Marseille University (AMU). The merger was built, step by step, by respecting a schedule allowing, after long discussions, at different stages, to be validated by a vote on the board of directors of each university.
