About the university
As early as 1960, leaders of the educational and social sector were reflecting on a project to bring together training schools for the educational and social professions. In 1970, this interest was taken into account by the Ministry of Health, which decided to set up a training structure in Bordeaux: the Regional Institute for the Training of Social Workers and Social Research in Aquitaine. The project will be funded equally by the Ministry of Health and the National Fund for Family Allowances (building, equipment). The establishment was inaugurated on September 16, 1974 by Mr. René Lenoir, Secretary of State for Social Action. The management association is then chaired by Mr. Louis Picard, Regional Director of Social Security. Three training schools and a social work development center are located in this new facility. Other similar establishments were set up in France in the following years, leading the State to create, by decree of 22 August 1986, the Regional Institutes of Social Work.
