About the university
The Aix-en-Provence Institute of Political Studies, nicknamed "Sciences Po Aix", is a French public institution of higher education founded in 1956, located in Aix-en-Provence. It is one of the ten institutes of political studies in France and is therefore part of the grandes écoles. Sciences Po Aix is accessible on a competition open yearly to the baccalauréat holders of the year and those of the previous year. The entrance examination is jointly organized with six other Institutes of Political Studies, in the first and second year. The school is also accessible by competition directly in the fourth year Offering a five-year curriculum based on the LMD scheme, Sciences Po Aix delivers a master's degree. The curriculum aims at the acquisition by the students of a field of multidisciplinary competences (law, economics, history, among others) founding the understanding of the contemporary world. The school's mission is to train executives and high-level officials for public service and private sector. The IEP hotel was built between 1741 and 1750 under the direction of the architect Georges Vallon of Aix. In 1951, Paul de Geouffre de la Pradelle founded the Center for Political and Administrative Studies, a future institute. Sciences Po Aix is the heir of the Free School of Political Sciences, created in 1872 by Émile Boutmy to respond to a need for reform for the society and the republican state that had just been born after the break of 1870. The " Aixois institution was created by decree on March 27, 19564 under the name of the Institute of Political Studies of the University of Aix-Marseille. Its first director was Paul de Geouffre de la Pradelle. It takes its current name under the decree of 18 January 1969 It is a public institution of an administrative nature attached to the University of Aix-Marseille. (Formerly the University of Aix-Marseille-III - Paul Cézanne). Its status is set by the Decree of 18 December 19896. In September 2007, Philippe Séguin, then President of the Court of Auditors, was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors, succeeding Jean-Paul Proust, Minister of the Principality of Monaco. In July 2010, Christine Lagarde succeeded her, followed by Maryvonne de Saint-Pulgent in April 2015
