About the university
Until July 1973, the Lyon II university included all the disciplines of human, social, legal and economic sciences. At that time, a split took place, which was directly a consequence of the events of May 1968, violent in Lyon (during which a police commissioner died, crushed by a truck). The Lyon 3 university is then created. Even today the two universities keep the specificities of the reasons for their split. This is done in the more general framework of the creation of distinct universities, often carried out along political lines. When they result in situations of real conflict, the Minister of Education Joseph Fontanet settles authoritatively, so in Lyon or Aix-Marseille. According to the Rousso report (2004): "It thus takes a public policy decision which seeks to assert the primacy of the State over the principle of university autonomy when academics are unable to solve a major crisis alone". In 1969, the Minister of Education Olivier Guichard announced the creation of Lyon-I, which includes the former faculties of science and medicine, and Lyon 2, which includes the former Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Law, as well as that of future universities. Two years later, a split took place in Lyon 2, culminating in the creation of Lyon-III (ministerial decree of 26 July 1973).
