About the university
Clermont-Ferrand had only one university in the nineteenth century. In 1976, due to political divergences following the Faure law of 1969, the university was split into two. The University Clermont I (later renamed University of Auvergne) and the University of Clermont II (Blaise Pascal) were created by decree of 16 March 1976, each university dividing the disciplines. The two universities lived apart. Reflections on a possible merger appeared in 2012 as well as following the vote of the law of 23 July 2013 on higher education and research. It was officially announced on 23 September 2013 by the presidents of the two universities. The name of the future university was unveiled in January 20153 while its organization was presented in June of the same year. The merger was formalized by decree of 13 September 2016.
