About the university
Although tertiary education existed in the Antilles-Guyana at the end of the nineteenth century in embryonic forms, higher education developed mainly after the Second World War, with the decree of 27 June 1947 linking the law school of Fort-de-France -France at the University of Bordeaux. The latter mandates the dean Henri Vizioz of the Faculty of law to organize an Institute on the model of the one already created in Pau. The Dean's death on the return journey from his mission in 1948 resulted in the Fort-de-France Institute of Law taking its name. At the Henri-Vizioz Institute of Law and Economics in Martinique, in 1963 there was a Center for Higher Education in Martinique and a Center for Literary Higher Education in Guadeloupe, administrative and pedagogical extensions of the Faculty of Science and Technology Of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Bordeaux. The law of 12 November 1968 reshaped the administrative functioning of higher education in the West Indies-Guyana by transforming the Center for Higher Scientific Education, the Center for Literary Higher Education and the Vizioz Institute into a Teaching and Research Unit (EBU).
