About the university
Varios jóvenes hondureños, amigos y alumnos del padre José Trinidad Reyes llamados Máximo Soto, Alejandro Flores, Miguel Antonio Rovelo, Yanuario Girón y Pedro Chirinos, decidieron fundar una sociedad de estudios, que inauguraron el 14 de diciembre de 1845 con el nombre de "Sociedad del Genio Emprendedor y del Buen Gusto", primer antecedente de la Universidad. La Universidad conquistó la Autonomía el 15 de octubre de 1957 en virtud del Decreto N° 170 emitido por la Junta Militar del Gobierno, constituida por los señores Héctor Caraccioli y Roberto Gálvez Barnes. Ese mismo decreto contiene la primera Ley Orgánica de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, vigente hasta el 11 de febrero de 2005, cuando fue sustituida por la nueva Ley aprobada por el Congreso Nacional según decreto número 209-2004.
