About the university
In the year 1962, a group of prominent citizens of Vijayawada approached the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) to express the need for a college for women in their region. It was in response to this invitation that Maris Stella College was founded on 16th July, 1962 to become the first college set up with the express mission of educating young women to be intellectually competent, morally upright, socially committed and spiritually inspired so that they are equipped to contribute positively to family, community and nation. The college is proud to point out that we were one of the first institutions in the state to volunteer for accreditation by NAAC in 1999. The college was granted autonomy in 2003. It submitted itself for the second cycle of assessment in 2006, and was re-accredited at the A level. In the same year, we were recognized as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE) and continue to enjoy this status in the second phase, from 2014. The college has been re-accredited at the ‘A’ level in the third cycle of assessment completed in 2013.
