About the university
Gopika Sitaram Gawande Mahavidyalaya, Umarkhed, run by YAVATMAL ZILHA AKHIL KUNBI SAMAJ, UMARKHED, Formerly known as ARTS and COMMERCE COLLEGE was established in 1966 by JANATA SHIKSHAN PRASARK MANDAL, PUSAD, DIST YAVATMAL. It was handed over to present Society in 1976. The founder president Late Shree Narayanraoji Wankhede has established Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj Society to impart education to rural and educationally deprived people of Society. Umarkhed is one of the most rural and tribal areas of Yavatmal district and far away from most common developments. Due to poor financial conditions the college was not having its own building, the classes were taken at high school on rent basis. Late Narayan Patil Wankhede, Adv. Shree Anantraojee Deosarkar and their coworkers were kin about to provide adequate facilities to the students. The first step towards this was to acquire land. State Govt. has handed over 33 acres of Land about 2.5 Km from Umarkhed to construct College Building. The basement work of the main building was completed in 1980. For this, fund were raised from local community, farmers and donors.
