Accademia Alfonsiana Pontifical Institute of Specialisation in Moral Theology ad instar Facultatis

The Accademia Alfonsiana, located in Rome, is a Higher Institute of Moral Theology, founded by the Redemptorist Fathers. Since 1960, the Alfonsian Academy is part of the Theology Faculty of the Pontifical Lateran University and can issue Licenses and PhD degrees in Moral Theology. The Academy, according to the spirit of Sant'Alfonso, a Doctor of the Church, patron of the moralist Theologians and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, faithful to the Church's magisterium, is a mission.On August 2, 1960, an ancient desire of the Redemptorists became reality, with the inclusion of the Academy of Moral Theology at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Lateran University. On this date the Congregation for Seminars and Universities of Studies with a decree elevated the Institute created in the spirit of Sant'Alfonso to the Institute of Moral Theology. This allowed the Academy to admit all those who, having a Theology license, aspired to obtain a PhD degree in Moral Theology. Already, the Redemptorists after the proclamation of Sant'Alfonso as a Doctor of the Church in 1871 had sought to establish an institute devoted to the teaching and dissemination of the moral theology of Sant'Alfonso. The General Chapter of the Redemptorists in 1894 approved a decree that stated: "And the wish of the Chapter that in Rome, when it is possible, a General High School is erected, where one or another young father may come from various provinces Already finished studies so that, under the guidance of experienced fathers of the congregation, it can be more profoundly formed in both philosophical and theological studies that are proper to St. Alfonso and so fathers can in turn teach others.
