About the university
The Academy originates from the "San Luca Academy", which was born at the end of the sixteenth century and became a papal site for artistic studies. At that time, it was a prestigious meeting place for artists and, at the same time, an educational model to imitate for similar developing institutions. With the unity of Italy and Rome capital, there is a need to start a reform of art education that responds to the needs of the young Italian state. There is a slow process that seeks to affirm the types of didactics oriented towards cultural research and the professionalism associated with industrial and artisan development. The Academy first takes the name of "Academy of Fine Arts named San Luca", then "Institute of Fine Arts" until it is defined according to the current version of "Academy of Fine Arts in Rome". The historic complex which houses it on Via Ripetta, traditionally called "Horseshoe", was built in the 1940s as a home-made and was adapted to the Academy's office with the addition of specially designed rooms for the Free Nude School.
