About the university
The "Francesco Morlacchi" music conservatory is the first institution of high culture operating in Umbria and based in Perugia. The birth of a music school in Perugia dates back to 1788, when the Neapolitan composer and operaist Luigi Caruso (1754-1823) came to town. Among the students of the new School and of Caruso's master is Francesco Morlacchi (1784-1841), an important composer and operaist in Perugia, who gained the favor of the Court of Saxony, becoming, in 1811, a master chaplain of the Italian Opera in Dresden. Between 1870 and 1873, the director, Agostino Mercuri, named the school at Francesco Morlacchi, after turning it into a musical institute.
