The birth of the present institution dates back to 1875 by Giovanni Sgambati and Ettore Pinelli in the framework of the reorganization of the education carried out by the Savoy state, but the musical institution from which it derives (the Congregation of Musicals in Rome, then Academy) seems Is more than 500 years old. It is in fact in the sixteenth century that the Congregation of the Music of Rome took shape. It soon became the largest music school of the then Pontifical State and slowly became more important until it became one of the major schools in Europe. The Academic Hall was inaugurated in 1895.
