About the university
In 1751 the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts was born for the will of the Illuminated Aristocracy of Genoa, aware of the new ideas of the Enlightenment that began to circulate throughout Europe and which prefigured new teaching methodologies. Thus, the "private conferences" of young artists gravitating around the figure of Giovanni Francesco D'Oria, the proponent and promoter of the new foundation, were institutionalized. Amongst the most ancient, the Academy of Venice (1750), Parma (1757), Naples (1752) and the Brera Institute (1776) joined the pedagogical project. Only Bologna with its foundation in 1709 will precede it (except of course the "historical" five and seventeenth-century Florentine, Roman and Bolognese academies, far different from the eighteenth-century academies in the didactic and cultural structure).
