About the university
The Imperial Women’s Medical College, the predecessor of Toho University, was founded by the brothers Yutaka Nukada and Susumu Nukada in 1925. “Nature, Life, Man” the founding spirit of Toho University, is the title of a book by co-founder Susumu Nukada whose educational principles have given a distinctive ethos to the development of the university, which is focused on natural sciences and today consists of four faculties—Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Science, and Nursing—and three graduate schools. With a mission to “develop and foster distinguished professionals with rich humanistic sensibilities and wide-ranging knowledge who cherish nature and humanity based on respect for nature and a profound awareness of the dignity of life and of the individual,” Toho University has been a source of professionals centering on medicine, pharmacy, and nursing who devote their high-caliber scientific knowledge to the benefit of all. The medical centers in Omori, Ohashi, and Sakura affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine constitute a distinctive characteristic of Toho University. At these medical centers, students of the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nursing practice team medicine and refine their skills. Over 30,000 graduates of Toho University are contributing to society in Japan and around the world primarily in medical fields.
