In 1960, the preparation of power engineers began at the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute (now the Kazakh National Technical University named after KI Satpaev). The first issue of electrical engineers and heat-and-power engineers was carried out in 1966. Eugene Cherkasov made an outstanding contribution to the establishment and development of the graduating departments and the entire energy faculty of KazPTI, on the basis of which it became possible in 1975 to create an independent higher educational institution - the Almaty Energy Institute. In 1975, at the suggestion of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan and the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, a decision was taken by the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the formation of the Almaty Energy Institute on the basis of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute Power Department. This was dictated by the rapid development of the Ekibastuz fuel and energy complex, the construction of powerful thermal power plants, unique power transmission lines for ultra-high voltage, which required power engineers in a large number and a wide range of specialties. In 1989, the Almaty Energy Institute was the first in Kazakhstan and one of the few in the Soviet Union to be certified by the State Inspection Committee of the State Educational Establishment of the USSR. The high level of training of specialists in the AEI was officially recognized at the union level, and this is the undoubted success of the team of students, teachers and management of the Institute.
