About the university
The idea of the Lebanese University was echoed in the speech of Foreign Minister Hamid Franjieh on 11 December 1948 at the closing ceremony of the Third UNESCO Conference in Beirut, where he said: "Lebanon hopes to see in this place a Lebanese university whose spirit is the spirit of UNESCO." The building was intended to be known today as the UNESCO Palace.
