About the university
September 10, 1884 was then created in Mauritius, the first French Alliance. It is the first Alliance française of Mauritius but also in the world after that of Paris. A hundred adherents flocked quickly and the movement was followed in the French colonies (especially in Senegal). The objective of the Alliance was then to diffuse, in different ways, the French language. In 1953 a project was put in place in order to go against local authorities who wished to restrict or even completely eliminate French from the teaching programs. The Collège de Labourdonnais was created to become the college of the Alliance Française. The education provided and its functioning were in conformity with the rules established by the French National Education. From 1954 the college received grants from the Cultural Relations Department. The following years were very productive for the Alliance. The premises of the college were enlarged in order to receive all the pupils.
