About the university
CIESAS is part of the CONACYT System of Public Research Centers of the Social Sciences Subsystem. It was created 40 years ago by anthropologists Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán, Guillermo Bonfil and Ángel Palerm. The leadership that today distinguishes the institution, both in the fields of the disciplines that gave rise to it: Social Anthropology, History, Ethnohistory and Linguistics, as in those that also today cultivates such as Sociology, Political Science and Geography, is based on the realization of specialized research and training. The CIESAS has seven Headquarters, located in the same number of states: Headquarters Distrito Federal (Mexico City), Sede Golfo (Xalapa, Veracruz), Sede Noreste (Monterrey, Nuevo León) Sede Occidente (Guadalajara, Jalisco), South Pacific Headquarters (Oaxaca, Oaxaca), Peninsular Headquarters (Merida, Yucatán), Southeast Headquarters (San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas).
