About the university
The John Langdon Down Foundation was established on April 3, 1972, and is the first institution of its kind worldwide to provide educational, medical and psychological care to children, adolescents and adults with Down syndrome and their families. Its founder, the specialist teacher Sylvia G. Escamilla, had five children, of whom "Eduardo", the first, was born with Down syndrome. He died at the age of five in a tragic accident. With the mission of promoting the human rights, dignity and potential of people with Down syndrome to improve their quality of life , the Foundation was originally established in a rented and adapted house in Boulevard de la Luz 232, Jardines del Pedregal, Under the name of "John Langdon Down Institute"
