About the university
Al Quaraouiyine is a university located in Fez, Morocco. According to tradition, its construction begins in 859 during the reign of the idrissid dynasty. It is considered to be the oldest university in the world still in operation by UNESCO, the Guinness Book of Records, and by several historians. In the twelfth century, a whole series of names among the greatest were to be associated in one way or another with the Quaraouiyine: the great precursors of Sufism, such as Ibn Hrizim, Abou Madyane, Abdeslam Ben Mchich Alami, Avenpace philosophers And Averroes, the geographer Al Idrissi but also Maimonides and Ibn Khaldun to name but a few.
