About the university
History of the Medical University is a continuation of the 18th century tradition of medicine practice and public health care in Bialystok. At that time, a palace school of midwives was established, later transformed into one of the few in the country Institute of Akuszerii, founded by Dr. Jakub Michelis at the beginning of the 19th century. The first radio of the Faculty of Medical Academy.In the Institute there was a clinic, fulfilling both therapeutic and didactic functions. Officially, the University was established in 1950 as the tenth in Poland Medical Academy. Soon it was renamed to the Medical Academy. Branicki Palace became the headquarters of the newly established establishment. The first Rector of the Medical Academy in Bialystok was appointed prof. Tadeusz Kielanowski, a native of Lwow. Many pre-war workers and university graduates from Vilnius, Cracow, Lwow, Poznan, Warsaw or Lublin have found themselves among the university's academic staff. Students building a dormitory. The Faculty of Medicine started 168 students. Most of the theoretical facilities were located in the adjacent building of the former Teachers' Seminary - now Collegium Primum. The buildings transferred to the University were destroyed in 1944. After the end of the war, their reconstruction began. After the establishment of the AMB, workers and students helped with the construction work. The clinical base of the new university was the hospital in operation, survived by war fires. In 1950, the first scientific and didactic plants were established and the Ftyzjatria Clinic was established.
