The Polytechnic Institute of Setubal (IPS) is a state institution of higher education that falls into the polytechnical subsystem. IPS comes in the context of the creation in Portugal of a new network of the higher polytechnic school in 1979, initially integrating the two schools located in Setúbal; The School of Technology (ESTSetúbal) and the School of Education (ESE). Currently, IPS includes, in addition to this, three schools: the School of Business Administration (ESCE), the Barreiro Technologies School (ESTBarreiro) and the School of Health (ESS). The activities of the five schools are coordinated by the central services. There is also the sixth organizational unit aimed at supporting students, the social services (SAS) responsible for housing, food, psychological support and sports and recreational activities. As a public institution, the main IPA funding is able, through appropriations, to be made in the state budget, which is supplemented with their revenues from fees, research contracts and services abroad. The recruitment, selection and evaluation of teachers and non-teaching technical and administrative personnel are framed with relevant career regulations, as well as other central rules designed for all government employees. In turn, when recruiting staff, both in rooms and in the category, it is also limited by law and budget constraints.
