UBB is a public higher education institution whose mission is to promote and support the development of specific cultural components in the local, regional, national and international community. The history of the academic education of Cluj is a long one, being closely related to the evolution of the town on Somes. The beginnings of local university life went down to the sixteenth century. In 1578, Transylvanian prince Stefan Báthory requested the agreement of Pope Gregory XIII to set up a Jesuit college in Cluj. The following year the Pope sent the first mission to Transylvania, including the Jesuits Stefan Szántó (Arator), Jakob Wujek, Valentin Ladó, Luigi Odescalchi, Justius Rabbus, Matias Thomány and Wolff Schreck. The founding diploma of the Iezuit Major College in Cluj was issued by Stefan Báthory on 12 May 1581 in Vilna (Vilnius, today in Lithuania). The founder's wish was for this College to be an institution similar to the consecrated universities of the age, to have grammar, philosophy, theology, and rhetoric courses. In this college the Latin, Hebrew and Greek languages ​​were to be studied, with baccalaureus, magister and doctor degrees. The first rector of the college was Jakub Wujek. The teaching language of the College was Latin.
