About the university
Gawharshad Institute of Higher Education (GIHE) is a nonprofit institute of higher education founded in August 2010 by Dr. Sima Samar, the Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission. GIHE offers higher education services in accordance its Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Economics registration. Gawharshad Institute of Higher Education was named after Queen Gawharshad Begum of the Timorid Empire who had a leading role in the development of arts, science, literature, philosophy and architecture in Afghanistan in the 15th century. GIHE offers undergraduate degree programs in Economics, Management, Business, Law, Political Science and Engineering. At the end of 2013, the total number of students was 1394, 31% of them female, and the total number of faculties is 81. GIHE puts special emphasize on women’s education, and through the Women’s Empowerment Centre (WEC) is working to facilitate female education in GIHE. More than 300 female students have benefited from the services of WEC.
