About the university
The emergence of Sint-Lukas Brussels dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century, then in Belgium driven by the neo-Gothic ideas of Baron JB Bethune and pedagogical principles of brotherly Mares of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and the financial support of the Catholic aristocracy and bourgeoisie were established several campuses for art and architecture education. These schools were primarily motivated by a Catholic reaction to classicism and liberalism that were freely available in the academies and relied initially on the Gothic Revival. Yet the success of the schools should be largely attributed to their artistic-educational project. Successes in the 19th and 20th centuries The young art schools managed better than the academies bound by tradition to respond to the renewal efforts of the new generation of young artists. They developed before their own, original art pedagogy which was partly based on the mastery of and dedication to the craft and the other was based on the idea that education is not only provided training but also offered a formation of the personality of the students. In 1881 also founded a St. Lucas School in Brussels. Six years later received a private campus on the Paleizenstraat. From its inception, the Brussels school already had some very personal traits. Unlike other écoles Saint-Luc, he had no Patronage and he was a pure brotherly school. Therefore he could soon sail a wayward course. He took off the first Saint Luke School of the narrow confines of the Gothic Revival and could anticipate the subsequent current trends in art, architecture and design. In this way, provided the schools and their graduates' significant contributions to the flow of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau and then also the modernist, postmodern and contemporary art.
