About the university
With a strong tradition of excellence, the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music occupies a privileged place among the music education establishments in the country. Its origins go back to 1920, when Sister Marie-Stéphane (Hélène Côté) conducted a program of musical studies in all the teaching houses of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Twelve years later, in 1932, she established the École supérieure de musique in Outremont, affiliated with the faculty of arts at the Université de Montréal. It was in 1951 that the institution officially took the name of Vincent-d'Indy to commemorate the centenary of this eminent French musician and pedagogue. The decades of the 1960s and 1970s were marked by intense activity at the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music, which, from its new building on the mountain, now overlooks the city of Montreal. Subsequently, a new Ministry of Education policy transformed teaching methods and the educational system. The graduate schools gradually lose their privileged character and the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music must abandon the university program of music education. With its prestigious reputation, the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music turns to the future and continues to offer programs that ensure a highly renowned musical education. In 1978, the School became a recognized institution to offer a pre-university college course in music education. Since its inception in 2013, the School has set up a jazz section for college students. A High School Music-Education Profile and a Primary Music Studies program were also developed in partnership with the Saint-Nom-de-Marie Boarding School and the Saint-Joseph School. In addition, the Vincent-d'Indy School of Music is involved in the musical training of young people and adults of all ages through a wide range of courses open to all levels of learning. She continues to lead and lead a network of approximately 400 affiliated faculty members across the province and beyond the borders of Quebec.
