About the university
The roots of the University of Atacama are historically linked to its two parent institutions: the School of Mines and the Normal School of Copiapó. The mining boom begins in Atacama with the discovery of the silver ore in Chañarcillo. 1857: President Manuel Montt founded the School of Mines whose first mission was to train trained personnel to work on the nascent mining operations of the 19th century. The training given in Copiapó soon spread to students from other provinces and neighboring countries, such as Argentina and Bolivia, under the important influence of the scientist Ignacio Domeyko, father of mining in Chile. The government arranged for the change of dependency of the School of Mines, from the Lyceum of Copiapó to the Ministry of Public Instruction, then to the Ministry of War, returning to the Ministry of Public Instruction to finally depend on the Ministry of Industry.
