West China Medical Center Sichuan Medical University

Over the past century, the faculty and students of the Center have been working arduously, one generation after another, dedicating them to the sacred medical cause. The Center has experienced a leaping development and forged its centurial prosperity after an enduring striving: its predecessor WCUU was founded in 1910, granted to register by the former Chinese government in 1933, jointly run by five universities during the Anti-Japanese War and renamed “West China University”(WCU) after the people’s government took over the university in 1951. It was identified as a professional medical college—Sichuan Medical College—after a series of departments adjustments and reforms in 1953, and then renamed “West China University of Medical Science” in 1985 so as to adapt to the development of medical education and to meet the need of promoting international academic exchange. The merger with the former Sichuan University in 2000 has greatly speeded up the development of the Center from a medical university into a comprehensive research university with full range of disciplines covering arts, science, engineering, and medical sciences. Thanks to the merger, Sichuan University possesses a more integrated system of disciplines as a comprehensive university and obtains a sound base to build a first-class institution of higher learning. Thanks to the merger, the Center itself also achieves a speedy development and a significant leap.
