About the university
The establishment was created by Ordinance No. 73 of September 22, 1961, then known as the National Pedagogical Institute of Léopoldville. Its creation aimed to fill the shortage of professors following the massive departure of Belgian professors during the Congolese crisis. After requesting UNESCO's assistance, the Congolese Government recruited a team of expatriate teachers to train qualified teachers for secondary education. The institute opens its doors on December 5, 1961. On 25 February 2005, the President of the Republic, Joseph Kabila, renamed the institute as a "National Pedagogical University".
