About the university
The University of St. Thomas Aquinas was created by the papal bull In Apostolatus Culmine on October 28, 1538. Pope Paul III established with this bull what would later become the first university in America. The University of Santo Domingo forms together with the first cathedral, the first hospital and the first customs office; The set of institutions of America installed in the city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. The university ceased to be a Studium Generale, which was run by the Dominican congregation, to become the center of education in the new world. By means of the abovementioned bull, this General Survey is ascended, which the Dominicans directed from the year 1518, to the category of University.
