About the university
Founded in 1865 as the "École centrale d'architecture", it is the oldest modern school of architecture in France. It was recognized of public utility from the year 1870. It originated in Eugène Viollet-le-Duc's desire to reform the teaching of the Imperial School of Fine Arts, in order to introduce specific courses in the architectural profession (both modern and medieval , Law, hygiene, etc.). He then supported the project of Émile Trélat, engineer of the Central School of Arts and Manufactures, who since 1852 had been the holder of the chair of civil construction at the Imperial Conservatory of Arts and Crafts1 to create a "free school" of architecture And to react against the monopoly exercised by the Academy of Fine Arts on education.
