About the university
The School of Fine Arts of Marseille was founded in 1752 thanks to the initiative of the painters Bardon, Jean-Joseph Kapeller and Moulinneuf and the sculptor Jean-Michel Verdiguier under the patronage of Duke Honoré-Armand de Villars. An annual grant of 3,000 livres is granted to him by the city of Marseilles4. The school was first installed in the premises of the arsenal, which had just been transferred to Toulon and then to the alleys of Meilhan. The French Revolution stopped all activity within the institution. The school was reconstituted in 1796 under the name of a school of drawing by the painter Guenin, and installed in the Bernardines convent, which also hosts the Imperial Lyceum, the Academy of Marseille and the Museum of Fine Arts of Marseille. Given the increase in the number of high school students and the narrowness of the school, the School moved in 1874 and moved to the Palais des Arts built on this occasion. The school is experiencing educational reforms, an increase in its workforce and the emergence of new disciplines. On March 4, 1969, a new building was inaugurated in Luminy, where the School was transferred. A new reform led to the splitting of fine arts and architecture in the late 1970.
