Starting from the Technical Expert (KAT) course, under the auspices of the Padang Technology Education Foundation (Notary Deed No. 5 th 1972) then established the Technical Academy of Engineering (ATP) on February 21, 1973. At that time ATP had two courses namely Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering , Then added the Electrical Engineering of 1978. With a strong sense of spirit and motivation facing the challenges and problems of the West Sumatra area in producing skilled and professional HR, ATP developed into Padang Technical College (STTP) on October 19, 1989. In its development, STTP with 6 Engineering courses managing the S1 and D3 academic education pathways. Through a long process. Based on a comprehensive, integrated study and trends of science and technology development and future labor needs, STTP expanded the scope and engineering of the engineering field by adding 3 new courses in the academic course S1, namely Geodetic Engineering, Material Engineering and Informatics Engineering. Finally in accordance with Kepmendiknas no. 113 / D / O / 2002 dated June 7, 2002, STTP changed to ITP Institute of Technology ITP). In 2002, Padang Institute of Technology passed the selection with 40 other colleges from 104 PTN and PTS in Indonesia who participated in the Competition for Professional Development and Expertise Education (TPSDP) Batch II.
